What is a lab grown diamond & How are lab grown diamonds made?
Lab grown diamonds are increasingly getting more popular when purchasing either a diamond engagement ring, wedding ring or diamond jewellery in general. There are plenty of reasons why that is, and we’re here to tell you all about them, From understanding what lab diamonds are and how they’re made.
What is a lab grown diamond?
Lab grown diamonds are beautiful diamonds that are created in a laboratory, rather than being formed naturally in the Earth over millions of years. Many more people are opting to choose lab grown diamonds over mined diamonds, this is because they are identical to natural diamonds, yet much more ethically created and are more affordable than mined diamonds.
How are lab grown diamonds made?
Lab grown diamonds are made in a highly-controlled laboratory. They duplicate how the diamonds naturally develop in the Earth - meaning that lab grown diamonds hold exactly the same physical and chemical properties as mined diamonds. This also means that lab grown diamonds visually look (and are) exactly the same as mined, it’s just how they are originally formed. Laboratories use advanced technology to form the diamonds, either using extreme pressure and heat or a deposition process known as CVD(Chemical Vapour Deposition). At Deltora Diamonds, we use CVD to form the diamonds - which is a more premium method to ensure the purity of the diamond - as it only introduces carbon to create the stone.
How are Lab Grown Diamonds Made? Our Process Using CVD:
- Our diamonds are created by using tiny carbon seeds of pre-existing diamonds.
- The diamond is then placed into a sealed chamber
- The chamber is heated to approximately 800°C and flooded with carbon gas
- The gas then ionizes, which breaks down into pure carbon
-
The pure carbon molecules then attach to the original, tiny diamond seed
- This process then carries on until a fully formed diamond is created
Just like mined diamonds, lab grown diamonds are graded for cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
How are diamonds mined?
The reason why many people now choose lab grown diamonds instead of mined, is because the process of mining diamonds is very controversial. Not only does it have a negative impact on the environment, which includes soil erosion, deforestation, and ecosystem destruction. But the method of mining diamonds is known to be associated with using forced child labour and can be traded illegally to fund violent conflicts and human rights abuses. Which is why choosing a lab grown engagement ring is a much more ethical and sustainable purchase than buying a mined diamond ring.
Lab grown diamonds are also more affordable than mined diamonds. This is because not only is the supply chain significantly shorter as lab-grown diamonds skip the mining process, but also because mined diamonds are much rarer than lab grown – ultimately resulting in a less expensive diamond.
